Privacy

The calculator collects nothing

Every figure you type into the cover calculator stays in your browser. It is not transmitted, not stored and not seen by us. We record one analytics event noting that somebody began using the calculator, with no amounts and no inputs attached to it. If you press the button to talk to an adviser, the rounded total is carried into the form URL where you can see it and remove it before sending anything.

What we collect, and only when you submit a form

Referral form: first name, last name, email, mobile, how and when you would like to be contacted, your region, what you would like to talk about, whether you already have cover, the calculator estimate if you left it attached, anything you wrote in the note, and the consent you gave with its version and timestamp.
Contact form: your name, email and message.
Introductions waitlist: your email address, and nothing else.
Automatically, with any submission: your IP address, browser user agent, the referring page, and the coarse location our host derives from the request. This is kept to tell real submissions from automated ones.

What we never collect

Health information, medical history, whether you smoke, your income, and your date of birth. We ask for none of it, anywhere on this site, including on the referral form. Privacy Act 2020 information privacy principle 1 says to collect only what is necessary for the purpose, and none of that is necessary to introduce you to an adviser. The adviser asks what they need, directly, and holds it under their own privacy obligations.

The note field on the referral form carries a reminder not to include health details for the same reason. If you do, we will pass it on with the rest of the form, because that is what you asked us to do.

Why we collect it

To pass your details to the adviser firm, if that is what you asked for.
To answer a message you sent us.
To email you once when introductions open, if you joined the waitlist.
To keep a record of the consent you gave, so we can always show what you agreed to.

Who it goes to

The adviser firm — the partner adviser firm— but only what you submitted on the referral form, and only after you ticked the consent box. Information privacy principle 11 permits disclosure where you authorised it, which is the whole reason the box exists and the reason it is never ticked by default. Nothing from any other form goes to them, and waitlist emails go to nobody.
Our service providers. Notion, where submissions are recorded; Resend, which sends the emails; Vercel, which hosts the site; PostHog, for anonymous analytics. Some of these store data outside New Zealand, principally in the United States. We use them to run the site, not for any purpose of their own.
Nobody else. We do not sell, rent, trade or share personal information, we run no advertising, and we do not operate a marketing list.

This is the text beside the tick box on the referral form, stored verbatim with every submission:

Withdrawing consent

Email us at any time and we will ask the adviser firm to delete what we sent and stop contacting you, and we will stop as well. You can also tell the adviser firm directly. Withdrawal does not undo what has already happened, but it stops everything after it.

How long we keep it

Referral submissions and their consent records: two years from the date of submission, then deleted. We keep them that long so that we can show what a person agreed to if it is ever questioned.
Contact messages: twelve months after the matter is dealt with.
Waitlist emails: until introductions open and we have sent that one email, or until you ask us to delete yours, whichever comes first.
Analytics:according to our analytics provider’s own retention settings. It holds no names, emails or calculator inputs.

Seeing it, correcting it, deleting it

You have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you and to ask us to correct it, under information privacy principles 6 and 7. Email us at hello@life-insurance.co.nz and we will answer within 20 working days. You can also ask us to delete what we hold, and unless we are required to keep it we will.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled a privacy matter, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.

Cookies and analytics

We use PostHog to count page views and a small number of events, such as somebody starting the calculator or submitting the referral form. No amounts, no form contents and no calculator inputs are attached to any event. We run no advertising trackers and no third-party marketing pixels.

Payments

There are none. This site sells nothing, takes no card details and has no payment processor. Our revenue is invoiced to an adviser firm, not to visitors.

Security

Submissions travel over HTTPS and are held in access-controlled accounts with our service providers. No system is perfect; if something goes wrong that affects you, we will tell you, and we will notify the Privacy Commissioner where the Act requires it.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version goes here with a new date. A consent you already gave keeps the wording it was given under, which is why consents carry a version number.
